Online Lessons
You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons. Yushin Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully give you instructions on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the previous lessons, so you can watch what every other student has learned in the past. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Yushin Sensei will be happy to give you feedback.
Start using one slightly longer than the standard length, and eventually, use the longest one possible. The chart to check the standard length is available on the Tozando website. Yushin Ryu aims to be able to handle the longest katana possible. Yushin Sensei uses a 2.8 Shaku katana, and Shogo uses a 2.7 Shaku katana.
You can start training as long as you have an Iaitō (Daishō) and Obi; any comfortable clothes are okay at the beginning. However, you need all the training gear if you want to participate in the online events or training camp.
Our online lessons are held on Fridays from 10 PM to 11 PM and on Sundays from 9 PM to 10 PM in Japan Standard Time (JST). Please use this website to check the time in your country. It shows multiple clocks simultaneously, showing the time in different countries.
The Dan rank promotion exam is held annually in Osaka, Japan, in November/December. However, we will also be doing practice exams in May and November. The practice exam will be held online for the students to practice taking an exam. Before the official exam, we will hold a training camp in Japan to improve everyone’s skills. New information will be posted on our Patreon page, so to stay updated, please follow us as a free member.
Yes, it’s not a problem at all. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have Yushin Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing.
Yes, our online lessons are specially designed for single-person training. You do not require a partner to train and receive the official Dan ranks. Conversely, taking lessons with two or more people is not a problem. Rather, you can engage in friendly competition by playing the role of each other’s opponent and checking each other’s skills.
Samurai Training in Kyoto
Yes, you can participate. Regular lessons are held on Fridays at 6:30 p.m., Saturdays at 5:30 p.m., and Sundays at 5:30 p.m. For a one-time fee of ¥10,000, anyone who took part in our “Samurai Training with the Modern-day Musashi” can join a 3-hour class. The rental of necessary training gear and tools and four mats for cutting are included in the price.
If you wish to become a full-time dojo student, please contact us through the form on this website. We have had more than six people from overseas who joined the Samurai Training Activity and became full-time students. Please don’t hesitate to contact us.
There is enough space for even large suitcases. Please bring your luggage with you directly when you have to move from your hotel.
Only those 12 years of age or older may participate. This is for safety reasons; it is difficult for children under 12 years old to wield a real katana properly.
Anyone over the age of 12 is welcome to participate, regardless of gender. In our dojo, there are rather more female trainees.
No previous martial arts experience is necessary.
Even if you are completely new to martial arts, we will carefully teach you everything from the beginning. We provide all the necessary equipment. All you need to do is come dressed comfortably.
