Your ninety minutes

01 Dress

Step into the attire

Change into traditional training wear, tied properly for you by the instructors. From the moment the belt is knotted, the dojo feels different — and so do you.

Everything is provided. Come as you are, straight from sightseeing.

02 Train

Learn the sword, move by move

Learn real cutting forms — kata — with a practice blade, guided move by move beside the instructor. Then hold a genuine katana, sheathed, and feel the true weight samurai carried.

Near the end, each guest is called up to show their form — with gentle advice, and yes, everyone passes.

03 Witness

Watch live steel cut — up close

Steps away from you, your instructor performs tameshigiri — a genuine cutting demonstration with a real blade — after a display of the rare two-sword form. The sound alone is something you’ll describe for years.

Live steel is handled by the instructor only — that’s what makes it safe, and what makes it real.

04 Remember

Take the story home

Finish with commemorative photos in full attire, in a real dojo — no filters needed. Feeling ambitious? Add a genuine suit of samurai armor on the day and be photographed as a warlord.

Armor add-on: ¥10,000, ask on the day.

Plan it between temples

The dojo sits in central Kyoto, in the Kawaramachi area — minutes from where you already are. Morning session, afternoon tea ceremony; or temples by day, swords before dinner.

Before You Book

Questions travelers ask

Can we book for today or tomorrow?

Often, yes — sessions are small, so check the live calendar. If you can see a time slot, it’s available.

What if it rains?

Perfect timing. The dojo is fully indoors — this is the Kyoto plan that doesn’t care about the forecast.

Is it safe for beginners and kids?

Yes. Your own training uses a practice blade; the genuine katana is handled sheathed, so you feel its weight safely. Live steel is demonstrated by the instructor only. Ages 12 and up join right in — younger children on request.

How long should we plan for?

The training itself is 90 minutes. With changing back, photos and time to look around, plan for about two hours at the dojo.

Do we need experience or fitness?

None. Most guests have never held a sword. The pace is calm and everything is taught from zero.

What should we wear or bring?

Nothing special — comfortable clothes are fine. Traditional attire and all equipment are provided at the dojo.

Is it in English?

Yes, the whole session is English-friendly. Language has never been a barrier here.

What if our plans change?

No problem — you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before your session. Just amend or cancel through your booking confirmation.
